August 21, 2012: One Direction: A Look Into The Group

Did you think that the boy band era was a thing of the past? Think again. The hunky fab five from Great Britain and Ireland that we know of as One Direction has come on the scene with a bang reminding us why boy bands typically work. There are always going to be tweens and teenagers looking for puppy love and oogling over adorable guys with sweet dance moves. And members Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Harry Styles, and Louis Tomlinson are nailing this image and thus, have become a worldwide sensation in just a year and a half. The group formed in a bit of a more unique way than most bands. All five heartthrobs auditioned individually for the UK television show, The X Factor, produced and judged by Simon Cowell, the cheeky and opinionated judge we know so well from American Idol and America’s The X Factor. When neither of the boys made it through, it was suggested for them to form a group and to see if they could make it work together. And make it work they did. They finished in third place and signed on to a $ 2 million recording contract with Cowell’s recording label, Syco Records.

Up All Night, the bands debut CD, was released in early 2012 and landed in the lead position on the Billboard 200 chart. This marked the first time a UK group earned the top spot with a debut album in US history. The first single that came off the album, What Makes You Beautiful, was heard on just about every radio station, every hour, and because of it’s catchy chorus and likeable tune, you couldn’t help but bob your head and sing to hit. One Direction headed to the Brit Awards and took home the award for Best British Single. The world also heard it at the 2012 Summer Olympics closing ceremony in London, England. A pretty big gig for this new group!

In December 2011, the five cuties whose style is very clean and a bit preppy, embarked on their first tour, the Up All Night Tour, which started in the UK and then headed to North America and Australasia. Every show was sold out proving that One Direction was doing a lot of things right. A DVD of the tour, Up All Night: The Live Tour debuted in May 2012 and, of course, topped more charts in 25 countries across the world. They recently announced the 2013 World Tour, which will have the phenom group performing at 101 shows across the UK, Ireland, North America and Australasia.

What you can expect from this concert tour event is, surprisingly, great singing, and not so surprisingly an entertaining performance and a lot of screaming fans. Summer 2013 seems so far away but it will be here before you know it.
