This incredibly moving play, based on the Pulitzer Price winning novel by Alice Walker, was produced by Oprah Winfrey, who earned an Oscar for her role in the 1985 film version directed by Stephen Spielberg. The Color Purple tells the tale of Celie, a meek Southern woman who is raped by her father at an early age and gives birth to his two children. Celie then suffers further abuse from the man she is forced to marry. However, when she meets Shug Avery, her husband's lover, Celie finds her own voice and learns how to speak up for herself. With its tale of courage in the face of enormous adversity, The Color Purple has served as an inspiration for women everywhere.
