Info:
One of the most successful plays in history, Les Miserables has entertained audiences for more than 16 years and 6680 performances. Set in 19th century France, Les Miserables tells the story of Jean Valjean who was sentenced to 19 years in prison for stealing bread to feed his starving sister and her child. The story begins as Jean Valjean is set free on parole only to find he is the target of suspicion and hatred. Unable to find work, Valjean breaks his parole and changes his name to travel across France after meeting one man who believes in him. Valjean is pursued by Javert, a devoted police inspector, throughout the play for forfeiting his parole. Despite Javert, Valjean finds work with his new name and becomes a wealthy business man. After returning once more to prison to save the life of an innocent man, Valjean adopts Cosette, the daughter of a woman who used to work in his factory. When Victor Hugo wrote this epic work, he intended it not only to tell the story of an impoverished people; He used it as a mouthpiece to voice his thoughts on religion, politics and society at large. Les Miserables is still an inspiration for many who feel oppressed by an unfair world.
