Sarah Jones’ ability to magically transform into every character she plays is quite remarkable especially considering the wide rage of genders, ethnicities and ages. Even in the large theatre of a Broadway play, Jones still manages to make a connection with her audience. She has a wonderful ear for the speech rhythms and idiosyncrasies of each character and a talent for giving them a life of their own. In her show depicting immigrants, Jones has incredible insight into the way race and ethnicity affect how people are treated in society. Each character struggles to overcome the stereotypes cast upon them, and at the same time, struggles to overcome the stereotypes they place on others like them. With characters like Bao Viet-Dinh, a Vietnamese American slam poet champion, and Rose Aimee Sylvince, whose poem “God Bless America…but not because of you” was inspired by a racist real estate agent, Jones’ background as a slam poet is evident.
