This play is an adaptation of the complex book by Haruki Murakami which details in six short stories the effects of the 1995 earthquake in Kobe, Japan. Although the play follows two drastically different short stories in the book, it still manages to brilliantly weave together the two plots making the tale entertaining and accessible to wide number of audiences. This is no small feat considering the content the play deals with; Murakami’s book of short stories is often confusing and seemingly full of mixed messages. The play tells the story of three friends, Sayoko, Takatsuki, and Junpei, whose relationship becomes clouded with Junpei’s secret love for Sayoko. Inside this story is Murakami’s ‘Super Frog Saves Tokyo.’ This separate tale is combined with the main plot in a brilliant and creative way. After the Quake has done a magnificent job translating the Japanese storytelling of Murakami; it truly gives the stories a whole new meaning.
