With the combination of a great coaching staff and a rushing-oriented attack, the Washington Redskins finished with a record of 9-7 and third in the NFC East behind the potent Dallas Cowboys and the New York Giants. Their winning season earned the Redskins a wild card spot in the playoffs. In the first game of the season, Washington Redskins’ ticket holders watched a nail biter as their team went into overtime against the Miami Dolphins. Kicker Shaun Suisham kicked the 39-yarder to win the game. Clinton Portis started the season off strong rushing for 98 yards and completing one touchdown. Another key player was linebacker London Fletcher who improved the defense and made 12 tackles. He also had 10 tackles, one interception catch, and a fumble recovery in the loss against the Super Bowl bound Giants. His efforts were just as impressive against the Arizona Cardinals with 13 tackles and an interception that he ran back for a touchdown. Suisham repeated the opening game win with a 46-yard field goal, his fifth of the day, in overtime to beat the New York Jets. Gibbs was not impressed with their power running game and decided to increase the intensity of practices before week 10. These efforts helped the team go for 196 yards on the ground and with passing they totaled 296 yards. Quarterback Jason Campbells was decent during the first half of the season but his luck changed mid season. He threw an interception on a potential game winning drive with less than two minutes in the loss against the Dallas Cowboys. The following week against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Campbells threw another interception in the final minutes ruining the Redskins chances of a win. Tragedy struck the team that week as safety Sean Taylor was shot in his Miami home on November 26, 2007. His death the following day stunned the Washington Redskins franchise, Redskins fans, and football fans across the nation. The team started the game against the Buffalo Bills with only ten players on the field in honor of Taylor. The game looked as if they could win but Gibbs made an error in the fourth quarter when he called a second straight timeout. This caused a 15 yard penalty and changed a difficult 51-yard field goal for the Bills to a 36-yarder, which was successful. Todd Collins came in as the backup quarterback in game 13 to replace an injured Campbell. In ironic fashion, both starting quarterbacks were knocked out of the game in the first half with left knee injuries. This was Collins first time playing since 2004 and the following week, his first start since 1997. He threw for 254 yards in the win against Minnesota and 244 yards in the win against division rival Cowboys. The Redskins efforts solidified a wild card spot against the Seattle Seahawks in the first week of playoffs, but the team lost, ending their season. Legendary Gibbs decided to retire at the end of the season and hand over the team he’s loved and coached for so long. He plans to remain as a special advisor with team owner Dan Snyder.
