2006 Season Recap

The Super Bowl Champion Pittsburgh Steelers opened up the 2006 season with hopes of defending their 2005 title.  However, those expectations came crashing down early in the season when the team started the year with a disappointing 2-6 record.  After a tumultuous off-season that had their star QB Ben Roethlisberger in a motorcycle accident and needing to have his appendix removed days before the season opener.  The Steelers were forced to go with incumbent back up QB Charlie Batch.  To the surprise of the Steelers and the fans, Batch was able to pull out a season opening win against the Miami Dolphins.

Even after getting Roethlisberger back in the line up the following week, the team was never able to get back to form from their winning ways the previous year.  In addition, star WR Hines Ward was plagued with injuries throughout the season and coincidently forced the team into a more conservative game plan.  Unable to defend their title in 2006 the Steelers want to have a more productive year in 2007, but they will have to do it with a new head coach as Bill Cowher has stepped down and will take an indefinite leave away from the game.

History

The Pittsburgh Steelers are one of the few original NFL teams.  Having no affiliation with any other leagues, the Steelers were founded in 1933 by Art Rooney.  Mr. Rooney purchased the organization for ,500 and turned it into one of the best organizations in the league.  Dominating the rest of the league in the 70’s by capturing four Super Bowl titles and being known for playing hard nose defense the Steelers defense was nicknamed the Steel Curtain.  Most recently the Steelers won another Super Bowl in 2005 to add to their hardware, mainly due to the same hardnosed defense they have been accustomed too throughout the years.
