Head Coach Tom Coughlin had a lot of work to do when he took over as coach in 2004 with a 4-12 record team. His controversial switching of the quarterbacks to first round draft pick Eli Manning was controversial as Manning did not deliver during his rookie campaign. But Coughlin knew what he was doing and just four years later, he had led his team to the Super Bowl XLII title. Manning saw his ups and downs during the season but peaked at just the right time. He began the season strong throwing four touchdown passes in game one and another touchdown in game two, although both efforts resulted in losses. After the two week opening season losses, the Giants went on to win six games in a row. The Giants defense was the key in the win against the Washington Redskins as they stopped them from scoring on third and fourth down on the goal line in the final minutes of the game. Defensive end Osi Umenyiora calculated six sacks, which became a franchise record and New York’s 12 total sacks tied the NFL record. Plaxico Burress would prove to be one of the team’s most important go-to guys. Although he suffered an injured ankle that plagued him throughout the season, he managed to put up big plays when needed. He had at least one touchdown pass in the first five games of the season. He also caught a Hail Mary 54-yarder to win against the familiar New York Jets. The Jets and Giants both play at Giants stadium. In the win against the Atlanta Falcons, Burress had six catches for 97 yards and a touchdown. Amani Toomer passed Tiki Barber for most receptions in club history with 587. The Giants participated in a first when they played their game against the Miami Dolphins in legendary Wembley Stadium in London, England. The rain fell consistently throughout the game making it difficult to have any offensive spectacles on the field. The game encouraged international acceptance of football and the NFL. Just four weeks later, Manning had possibly the worst game of his career against the Minnesota Vikings as he threw four interceptions, which were all converted into touchdowns for the Vikings. The only other game Manning has thrown four interceptions was, ironically, against the same team in 2005. In the second to last game of the season against the Buffalo Bills, running back Ahmad Bradshaw broke off for an 88-yard touchdown bound run. Although they managed to win, Manning had five fumbles and two interceptions. He was fairly consistent in the final game of the regular season, but he was no match for Tom Brady and the New England Patriots who beat them, 38-35. They would meet again just one month later in Super Bowl XLII. They earned a wild card spot in the playoffs allowing them to play in the postseason. In the first game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Toomer had an important game winning catch. The Giants went on to game two against the Cowboys where cornerback R.W. McQuarters intercepted Cowboys’ quarterback Tony Romo stopping the Cowboys’ chance for a comeback. Manning threw two touchdowns and had no turnovers. They entered the NFC Championship game against the Green Bay Packers, which turned out to be a nail biter and had Green Bay Packers ticket holders at the edge of their seats. Kicker Lawrence Tynes nailed a 47-yarder in overtime to seal the Giants win and a spot in Super Bowl XLII, as well as the NFC Championship title. The Super Bowl was played at the University of Arizona Stadium where the Giants faced the all-to-familiar New England Patriots. The game is arguably one of the greatest games in NFL history and was an instant classic. While teams flip flopped through the game, the Giants rallied from a three point deficit to win the game on a miraculous pass from Manning to Burress in the final 35 seconds. The New York Giants became the first NFC Wild Card to win the Super Bowl. If you haven’t clicked off this page and bought your tickets yet…then now is the time!
