Colts Franchise History

The Colts franchise was established in December 1946. The Baltimore Colts played their first game on Sept. 7, 1947, defeating the Brooklyn Dodgers. The All-American Football Conference and the National Football League would eventually merge in 1950. The Colts had a 1-11 record in both 1949 and 1950 and the team was dissolved in January 1951.

In January 1953 Carroll Rosenbloom moved the NFL's Dallas franchise to Baltimore. They were able to keep the Colts name but chose to use the Dallas colors of blue and white. In 1954 Weeb Ewbank was hired as head coach and proceded to build the Colts franchise. He held the  position for nine seasons and on Dec. 28, 1958, the Colts defeated the New York Giants 23-17 for the "World Championship" They went on to repeat as champions in 1959, again defeating the New York Giants.

Legendary coach Don Shula became head coach in January 1963, and in 1964 the Colts won a club record 11 consecutive games under head coach Don Shula. The Colts made their first-ever Super Bowl appearance in 1969, losing the game to the New York Jets 16-7.

2007 Preview

The Colts are coming off their first Super Bowl win and as usual, it all starts with  quarterback Peyton Manning.  He will again run the offense with many talented weapons including wide receivers Marvin Harrison and Reggie Wayne, along with tight end Dallas Clark. Running back Joseph Addai, coming off a spectacular rookie year, will look to become the feature running back this year.  The defense will be anchored by defensive end Dwight Freeny and safety Bob Sanders and there focus will be to get the ball in the offenses possession.
