Detroit Lions: Venue: Ford Field Conference: National Football Conference Division: North Owner: William Clay Ford, Sr. Head Coach: Rod Marinelli Lions Franchise History The Lions history began as a team named the Portsmouth Spartans, originally based in Ohio. That team entered the NFL in 1930. The Spartans moved to Detroit and were renamed the Lions. The Lions have had their share of struggles in recent years, last making the playoffs in 1999 and were knocked off in the first round by the Washington Redskins. The Lions have won 4 NFL Championships. During their better years, the Lions had arguably the best running back to ever step on a football field in Barry Sanders, who was eventually inducted into the Professional Football Hall of Fame in 2004. 2007 Preview The Lions will again look to become a big play offense lead by offensive coordinator Mike Martz. Quarterback John Kitna has more weapons at his disposal, including wide receiver Roy Williams and rookie Calvin Johnson. Tatum Bell has been added to handle the running back duty. The Lions hope that a high scoring offense will make them a fun team to watch and contend for a playoff berth for the first time in seven years.
