Crennel made the controversial decision early in the first game to pull quarterback Charlie Frye and replace him with back-up quarterback Derek Anderson, which proved to be a very smart decision as he went on to be very consistent and efficient in the passing game. In his first game as a starter, Anderson threw for 328 yards and five touchdowns. The 45-51 win for the Browns is the eighth highest scoring game in NFL history. Anderson went on to throw 22 touchdown passes by week 12, which ties for the most passes for a Browns quarterback. Kicker Phil Dawson was a key player in many of the games. Early in the season his 40-yard field goal was blocked in the closing minutes allowing the Oakland Raiders to hold on to the lead. He nailed his ninth game winning field goal on a 25-yard kick against the Seattle Seahawks. Just one week later he missed a 53-yard field goal with 11 ticks left against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Dawson redeemed himself against the Baltimore Ravens kicking a 51-yarder to tie up the game and knock it into overtime, and then a 33-yarder to win the game. A name that all Browns’ ticket holders were familiar with last season was wide receiver Braylon Edwards. By the game against the Houston Texans, Edwards had registered 11 touchdown receptions. The last Browns player who had more than 10 was in 1969. He then went on to set the single season record with 15 in week 16. Despite an injury, tight end Kellen Winslow had four catches for 96 yards in the win against the Ravens. His 49-yard catch was a career long. By the end of the season, Winslow had recorded his first 1,000 yard season. Defensive back Leigh Bodden was crucial to Cleveland’s success as well. He intercepted Cincinnati’s Carson Palmer in the final seconds to help seal the Browns’ win. He imitated this performance when he intercepted St. Louis’ Marc Bulger with 37 seconds on the clock in the win against the Rams. His quick hands helped him get in the record books when he had five interceptions in the game against the Bengals, posting the most interceptions versus anyone.
The Cleveland Browns had a consistent effort throughout the season and finished with a 10-6 record and second in the AFC North. They were the only team that went 10-6 that did not make the playoffs. Grab your tickets now so you don’t miss out on any Cleveland Browns action next season.
