2007 Recap

Expectations were high going into the season as the Chicago Bears were coming off a NFC title and Super Bowl appearance in 2006. But, just one season later the Bears finished fourth in the NFC North and the team watched their efforts of a repeat season fall short.

In the opening game of the season, the Chicago Bears suffered an 11 point loss to the San Diego Chargers. The Bears responded in week two with a big win over the Kansas City Chiefs. Kick return specialist, Devin Hester continued to show Bears fans his impressive return ability and brought back a punt 73 yards for a touchdown and capped the game with a total of 143 return yards.

In the fourth week of the season, the Bears maintained control throughout the game against the Detroit Lions until the fourth quarter when the Lions scored 34 points. With this high mark, in addition to Chicago’s 14 points, a new NFL record was made for most points scored in a fourth quarter.

A few weeks later, the Bears faced off in a nail biter against NFC North rival, the Minnesota Vikings. Chicago came from two scores down to tie the game but then lost as Vikings’ kicker Ryan Longwell hit a career long 54-yarder as time expired. Hester, who had another punt return for a touchdown, broke the Chicago Bears franchise record for kick returns. In his short NFL career, Hester has already tallied up nine returns for touchdowns including five punts, three kickoffs, and one missed field goal. Hester’s brilliance brought back a punt and kickoff return for two touchdowns in the win against Denver and he returned a 64-yard punt in the last game of the season to seal the deal against the New Orleans Saints.

Throughout the season, Bears ticket holders saw the quarterback position being swapped between Rex Grossman and Brian Griese. Griese replaced Grossman in game four of the season and helped seal a win against the Philadelphia Eagles. His 15-yard toss for a touchdown capped off a 97-yard drive and gave the Bears the lead with nine seconds on the clock. Grossman also showed quality effort and finished the season throwing 122-225.

Head Coach Lovie Smith has taken the team to new levels since he began coaching the team in 2004 and always has big goals in mind. His next one is to take the Chicago Bears back to the Superbowl…and win.
