The Arizona Cardinals showed a lot of promise during the 2007 season as they came in with first year head coach Ken Whisenhunt. The Cardinals put up a tough fight throughout the season losing six of their eight losses by eight points or fewer. The wins and losses were inconsistent throughout the season and the Arizona Cardinals finished the season with an 8-8 record and second in the NFC West. Whisenhunt enjoyed bouncing amongst quarterbacks Matt Leinart, Kurt Warner, and occasionally Tim Rattay. Both Leinart, playing in only the first five games, and Warner suffered injuries throughout the season weakening the already blemished offense. In the second game of the season against the Seattle Seahawks, kicker Neil Rackers kicked a 43-yard field goal with one second left to tick. The Cardinals had rallied from a three point deficit to score twice in the final five minutes of the game. But in the very next game against the Baltimore Ravens, and the following against the Pittsburgh Steelers, the outcome was decided on the last few plays. This marked the fourth game in a row that the game was decided in the final minute. The team played disastrous against the Carolina Panthers giving up five turnovers, punting seven times and was penalized 11 times for 103 yards. In another nail biter for Cardinals’ ticket holders, Rackers missed a 54-yard field goal that would have won the game against the Washington Redskins. However, in the game against the San Francisco 49ers, Rackers made what was thought to be the game winning field goal, but a delay-of-game penalty forced it to be nullified and then Warner fumbled the ball in the end zone during overtime. His 29-yarder at the end of regulation tied up the second to last game of the season and his 31-yarder in overtime sealed the win for the Arizona Cardinals. The team went on to win their final game as well. The Cardinals’ eight wins are the most since the team won nine in 1998. With the guidance of Whisenhunt and two strong, healthy quarterbacks, the Cardinals should once again make the playoffs and the Super Bowl.
