Arizona Cardinals Franchise History

The Cardinals were founded in 1898 as a charter member of the NFL. The team used to play in Chicago’s South Side. It wasn’t until 1901 that the team took on the name Cardinals. The Cardinals are the oldest continuously run professional football franchise in the nation. The Cardinals have won two Championships in 1925 and 1947.

The club relocated to the Phoenix area in 1988 after an unsuccessful campaign for a new football-only stadium in St. Louis.  The team originally played at Sun Devil Stadium in the suburb of Tempe before moving to the University of Phoenix Stadium. The team was known as the Phoenix Cardinals before it started using "Arizona" in its name in 1994.
