The ABA and NBA merged in 1976, at the time the New York Nets had already won 2 ABA titles at the time in 1974 and 76. The Nets moved to New Jersey in 1978 and renamed the team the New Jersey Nets. In 1981 the team would become competitive again by drafting 3 # 1 draft picks in Buck Williams 3rd overall, Albert King 10th and Ray Tolbert 18th. These core players immediately took the team to the playoffs with a record of 44 and 38.
