The much anticipated match-up between the first and second overall picks in this year’s NBA draft is now over and done.  The winner of the match-up Michael Beasley put up 28 points 9 rebounds to Derrick Rose’s 10 point 4 assist and 5 turnovers.  Although you can't take much from summer league games were no fans are in attendance and more than 80% of the rosters are filled with rookies and NBA journeymen Beasley showed he is the top of his class.  Going up against already NBA established players Joakim Noah and Tyrus Thomas didn't rattle the promising rook.  He drove right and scored, drove left and scored and even pulled up from the base line and foul line for nothing but net jumpers.  His 28 points is ninth all time in points scored in the Orlando Summer League and had it not been for foul trouble that caused him to miss the entire second quarter Michael Beasley might have owned the summer league's points scored in a game record.  Heat fans should be delighted that they have a player of such caliber and putting him together with all-star Dwayne Wade this team is poised for great things.

On the other hand Derrick Rose looked like a deer lost in the headlights.  He was too pensive, sloppy and showed that he is not ready to run the ship.  I'm not saying that he won’t develop into a nice point guard eventually but shouldn't a #1 overall pick be able to contribute and show he has game from day one?  We all knew that Beasley was going to be a stud from the minute he stepped on a basketball court, it was Derrick Rose who had to prove that he was ready to take his game to the NBA.  Considering how bad he struggled against other rookies and NBA Journeymen was he worth being the #1 overall pick?  Time will tell but for now Beasley has one up on D-Rose.  There will be plenty more coming from both these players as they try to build their legacy in the NBA one game at a time.
