A Irish born band, U2 has come out of their punk/new wave roots to be one of the biggest bands in rock history. Bono and the boys have been releasing political, religious, and reflective music since the late 70’s. U2 is made up of a hard hitting rhythm section and an unconventional guitarist called The Edge. They were perfect for the 80’s arena style rock. They had their first hit albums with, “Boy” and “October.” It was easily a MTV hit with post punk songs like, “Gloria” and “I Will Follow.” They went on tour in the United States and started a huge cult following. In 1983, U2 began their political stance with War. The album went to number on in the UK and number 12 in the states. They released a live album and video of the tour for War and it became one of the most successful live albums in the UK and also was a starting ground for such political concerts as Live Aid and Band Aid. The next album to come along was Unforgettable Fire; which lead into a world wide tour and playing an unforgettable show at Live Aid.
It wasn’t until “The Joshua Tree’s” released in 1987 that U2 became superstars. Most people think this album is a work of art and in England the album went platinum in a record 28 hours. The band went on from there to other albums and documentary. They continued their wild arena shows with names like Zooropa and even having other identities such as Bono’s alter ego, the fly. The band released a new album a couple of years ago. They still continue to tour and stay active in politics and other world issues.
