Merle Haggard’s music is one that really interprets his life. His father was a fiddler and played honky tonk music. His mom (who was a church going woman) controlled everything that he and his father did. This made Merle want to rebel as much as possible. His father passing away made him fight back even more. He was in and out of detention centers, but he also found a love for Bob Willis and other traditional honky tonk country. When he was 12 he got his first guitar and has not put it down since. Merle has been in and out of jail for robbery attempts and other misdemeanors since the age of 14. Most of his music stems from his hard life as a kid and as an adult trying to raise a family and hold onto his music. Merle received many breaks from artists such as Lefty Frizzell, Bob Teague, and Wynn Stewart. It was actually Wynn Stewart that helped him out the most. He lent him one of his songs to record and the rest was country history. Merle Haggard is one of the most celebrated country artists to this date. He is still recording and writing music as well a touring all over and telling his hardening tales of mischief.
