Cesaria Evora originates from Cape Verde and her sound is of the Morna style. This is connected with the island which involves heavy percussion. She began performing at the age of 16. She recorded some tapes and they were distributed, however, Evora never left her native country. She stopped singing until she turned 45. At this age she finally ventured out of Cape Verde and eventually she recorded some songs in Portugal and then she started touring the United States and Canada. She continues to release music (now as an international star). One of her most recent releases featured artists like Bonnie Raitt and Caetano Veloso. Just recently she has had some success in North America; she appeared on The David Letterman Show. |
