Info:
The Championship of Wimbledon is the oldest and most prestigious tennis tournament in the world. Since 1877, the tennis tournament has been held at the All England Club in Wimbledon, outside of London. Not only is this where the first Lawn Tennis Championship took place, but it is the only match that is still played on the game’s original surface, grass.
The Wimbledon is one of four tennis matches, called the Grand Slam Tennis Tournaments. The other three matches are the Australian Open, the French Open, and the U.S Open. The Wimbledon takes place over a two week period in late June and early July. Each year, there are five major events, as well as four junior events, and four invitational events. The tournament also consists of the ladies’ and gentlemen’s finals, which are always scheduled for the last Saturday and Sunday of the Wimbledon Tournament.
There are several traditions involved with the Wimbledon Tennis Tournament. These traditions include strawberries and cream, Pimms spritzers, royal patronage, and a strict dress code for the tennis players. In the nineties, Wimbledon knew they had to make some changes to improve the quality of the event. They needed to modernize the old and prestigious event, not only for spectators, but players, officials, and even neighbors. Since then, they have added a broadcast centre, two extra grass courts, a new Millennium Building that provides extensive facilities with over 720 extra seats, an entrance building, housing for club staff, a museum, a bank, and a new ticket office. In 2009, even a retractable roof over the tennis courts was installed. For the first time in history, rain will not be able to postpone this premier event.
