With a national fan base weary of split championships and speculation as to which highly ranked team would beat one another, the Fiesta, Sugar, Orange, and Rose Bowls came together with the 6 major football conferences to create the Bowl Championship Series to determine the college football national champion. Though it has become the subject of ire for many football fans who would like to see more teams included in the process. Nonetheless, each year the BCS stages a compelling game between two of college football’s best one week after New Years to decide the national champion.
With the site of the game rotating between the four member bowls until 2006, a separate game has been played each year since 2007 that continues to rotate between the sites of the 4 bowls, allowing for two more teams to play in BCS bowls each season.
